Where janitorial establishments are most concentrated
Which states have the most employer janitorial establishments relative to their population? We compared all 50 states and the District of Columbia using U.S. Census Bureau data.
Montana leads on density.
Montana had 44.93 employer janitorial establishments per 100,000 residents in 2023. Wyoming followed at 44.00; Alaska was third at 35.04.
That is a population-adjusted comparison, rather than a ranking by the total number of establishments. Montana recorded 509 establishments. Texas recorded 3,858, but its larger population puts its density at 12.65 per 100,000 residents.
Calculated from 2023 County Business Patterns and Vintage 2023 population estimates. The full table and calculation are below.
What this means for a cleaning business
The table provides one view of the existing employer-business footprint in each state. It can help frame a more specific research question: how does that footprint compare with the offices, facilities and buyers in the area you actually serve?
A low figure does not establish an underserved market. A high figure does not prove stronger demand. Before choosing a market or a service page to build, investigate local buyers, the services they need, and the businesses already answering those needs.
How we calculated it
We selected NAICS 561720 (Janitorial Services) from the Census Bureau’s 2023 County Business Patterns state file, combining all legal forms with the lfo = − row. We matched each state to its July 1, 2023 resident population estimate from Vintage 2023.
Establishments ÷ population × 100,000
The analysis includes 50 states and the District of Columbia, and excludes Puerto Rico. We rank the unrounded rates and display two decimal places. The files contain 67,799 employer janitorial establishments across these 51 geographies. All selected counts and population values were available; missing values are never treated as zero.
For example, Montana: 509 ÷ 1,132,812 × 100,000 = 44.93, rounded.
The 2023 CBP release was published on 26 June 2025. The official CBP catalog and download directory listed 2023 as the latest reference year when checked on 7 October 2026. We use population estimates from the matching 2023 vintage for consistency; these are not 2026 business counts.
What this study does not measure
- Every cleaning business. County Business Patterns excludes nonemployer businesses.
- Distinct companies. An establishment is a business location. One company can have several.
- Commercial cleaning alone. The Janitorial Services category is broader than commercial-only contracts.
- Market opportunity. Resident population does not measure commercial floor space, buying intent, profitability or available contracts.
- Search visibility. These figures do not measure rankings, AI citations or online competition.
